15 Incredible Examples of Early Spirit Photography

Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
Spirit photography has been around since the 1860s, when William H. Mumler began to practice it. It is the art of capturing 'spirits' in images and is often used in ghost hunting. One of the best-known spirit photographers was William Hope, a member of the Crewe Circle Spirtualists group which existed during the early part of the 20th century.

Two spirits appear to emerge on the left-hand side, one above the other, in this photograph of a family group.
The images shown here were unearthed from an album found in a secondhand bookstore. The Crewe Spiritualists society was made up of six photographers and, indicating how many believed in the authenticity of spirit photography, a seventh also joined them, Archbishop Thomas Colley no less.

When World War I broke out, the popularity of the Crew Circle grew even stronger as loved ones wanted to be assured that their deceased were alright and to communicate with them.
Here, two women, perhaps sisters, sit while a female spirit appears above the woman on the right.

This ghostly image might send shivers down the spines of believers: a man sitting alone with the spirit of another man emerging from the ectoplasm to his right, looking right at him.
Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
Hope moved to London to become a professional medium in 1922, where his work was investigated by a number of 'ghost busters' – paranormal investigators who hoped to prove he was a charlatan.
The couple here are said to be the mother and father of the person who put the spirit album together, while the face of the ghost is apparently the sister of a man well-known to the Spiritualist Church movement. For some reason, the seated male looks angry, but it was the norm at that time for people to have very serious expressions in photographs.

Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
Next we see the eerie appearance of an ethereal woman's face to the right of the man, a ghost said to be the man's deceased first wife. Many believe Hope either already had a picture of the woman or asked the man for a picture to help him contact her in the 'ether-world' of the spirits.

Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
One of the most well-known attempts to prove Hope a fraud was made by Harry Price, of the Society of Psychical Research, who gave Hope glass plates embossed with a special mark that could not be seen except when exposed in a photo. Hope substituted these for regular glass plates in his images (like the one here in which two spirits appear to three family members) such that the marks did not show up – suggesting that he had used materials to fake the photographs.

Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
According to the National News Museum: "The image of a young man's face appears prominently over the man, draped in a cloak. The signature at the base of the image belongs to the sitter. The man had links with the person who compiled the spirit album, and he gave the photograph to her as a keepsake. He apparently recognised the young man's face."
Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
When Price published what he found later the same year – apparent evidence of the spirit photographer's skullduggery – Hope's supporters spoke out, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who published a book in response, The Case for Spirit Photography. This image is one of the odder ones: it looks as if the man is leaning into his spirit love, yet if there was a double exposure during the photo's processing, how could he have known she was there? Eerie? Maybe not.

Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
According to the National Media Museum: "The face of a young woman appears over the woman on the right of the photograph. The reverse of the photograph reads: 'Why is the child always pushing to the front?' and 'Do we get messages from the higher spirits?'; perhaps questions the women wanted answering. One of the sitters, at Hope's request, has signed the plate for authentication."

This image shows two Welsh mediums sitting for a photo in 1920 with the image of their deceased grandmother above them – or supposedly so. The mediums claimed that it is the only image of their grandmother there was. Hope is likely to have just superimposed a photograph of the woman over theirs to create the illusion.
Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
Here we have a group in the middle of a seance, taken in about 1920. The remarks in the spirit album says the table is levitating, though the most likely scenario is that the image of a mystical arm has been double exposed onto the picture.
Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
Shiver me timbers! Out of all the images shown here, this is easily the most ghostly, with shades of Dickens' Ghost of Christmas Past as well. A woman mourns her husband, and a man his father, in a Chapel of Rest, with the deceased wrapped in sheets and flowers. The family were Roman Catholics and are said to have believed in the afterlife. The image of the ghost with his black shroud was extremely well done.
Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
In this image, a family of three sits for the photo with a spirit floating across them. Some believe that this was made by placing a doll's head on a stick and then superimposing it. The background in the top left corner rather looks like it is outside, with vines on a fence, while the family background is dark.
Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
And in this photo, Mrs Bentley, once the President of the British Spiritualists Lyceum Union, has the image of her sister appear in the lower right – surely superimposed.
Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
Not just lay people believed in Hope and his spirit photographs. A clergyman and his wife had given birth to a stillborn daughter, and at a seance the spirits who allegedly spoke said they named her Rose and asked them to sit for a spirit photo. It is hard to find Rose, unless she is the bright light on the chest of the man, but the male spirit was said to be the deceased father of the clergyman.
Spirit PhotographyPhoto: William Hope
William Hope continued his work all his life but had another major denunciation in 1932 when Fred Barlow, a former supporter, and Major W. Rampling-Rose, gave a speech to the Society for Psychical Research, concluding that he was fraudulently placing other images over the people seated in his photographs.
Hope died in 1933, so it is hard to say if this had any effect on his reputation at the time. And who knows? Perhaps he really did find that there is more to life than we can see with the naked eye! Not likely, but he did a good job in the days before digital photography to conjure up his 'ghosts'.

Haunted Places Pennsylvania: Brian's Photos of Johnson Road

Brian has captured some interesting photos from Johnson Road in Monroeville, Pennsylvania—a location which is thought to be haunted by several spirits connected with homocides that occurred in the area.  Brian has a large number of photos from this location, and I've chosen to include ten below.  Brian writes:
Hello, friends, my name is Brian.  I'm a U.S. Navy veteran who believes in the paranormal.  I watch "Ghost Hunters" and "Extreme Paranormal" on the SciFi channel every week.  In fact, they're two of my favorite shows.  These shows are open about the fact that ghosts can be easily photographed with a digital camera.  On October 1, 2009, I bought a Polaroid digital camera and for the next week I took about 75 photos—none of the photos showed any sign of camera defection or discoloration.  On October 6, 2009, my friends Randy Myers, Brian Reed and I decided to investigate Johnson Road in Monroeville, PA.

The dark history of Johnson Road: On November 23, 1977, 6-year-old Beth Lynn Barr was abducted as she walked home from her 2nd grade classroom at Johnson Elementary School in Wilkinsburg, PA.  Although her killer was never found, her remains were found on Johnson Road, adjacent to Restland Memorial Cemetery.  On August 3, 1988, 13-year-old Penny Ansell and 12-year-old Melissa Baker were murdered by Steven Patrick Mignogna.  Their remains were discovered in a dump in the immediate vicinity of Johnson Road, Monroeville.  Mignogna was apprehended, imprisoned and after a fair trial was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole—he's serving his sentence in Somerset SCI, Pennsylvania.  Since that time, Johnson Road has been rumored to be haunted.

On October 6, 2009 my friends and I went to Johnson Road to familiarize ourselves with the area.  We took 20 photos and every photo was picture-perfect, no defects or discoloration.  On October 8, 2009, at approximately 9:15PM, we went to Johnson Road and began taking photos.  For the next week, we took approximately 120 photos of the area.  Many of the photos are normal, absolutely nothing that could be considered paranormal in any way.  About 10 percent of the photos are mysterious.  These photos reveal what appears to be paranormal activity: apparitions, mists and orbs.
03.jpg
None of the photos have been altered or photoshopped in any way, other than details and copyright notice added via Picasa 3.  Nobody was smoking when these photos were taken.  I held my breath when taking these photos so that it wouldn't be accidentally photographed.  The photos were taken in pitch black (no street lights), and all flashlights were turned off when these photos were taken.  We didn't see any mist or anything, until we looked at the LCD screen.  I'd also like to note that there are no streams or lakes in the vicinity.
A few other details that I would like to add: when we went to Johnson Road, we left the bad attitude at home, we went with good intentions and we made it clear that we weren't there to cause any harm.  Respect spirits and they'll respect you.  My friends and I want to thank Michelle for posting our story and photos to her website.  We hope everyone enjoys the photos.
Sincerely,

Thanks to Brian for sharing his story and photos.  If you have investigated the Johnson Road area in Monroeville PA, let us know by leaving a comment below.  Over the past few weeks, I've received some interesting comments regarding orbs.  Paul sent me a message, saying: "My group believes that the brighter the orb, the less time that person has been dead.  Very dim, see-through orbs have been dead a long time, with less energy since energy [and thus light] diminishes with time."  This is an interesting theory.  It seems possible that spirits who have died a long time ago may have less energy and therefore appear as dimmer, duller orbs.  Some of Brian's photos contain very bright orbs, while others are the traditionally duller (darker) orbs.

Vortex or Angel Photo from Tonya's Living Room?

Tonya sent me two photos (shown below), which she captured in her living room.  Tonya thinks it looks like an angel in the photos.  I admit, the image does seem to have wings—or at least the appearance of them.  The first photo is very wide, and has several orbs too.

Here is the second photo Tonya took.  I've cropped the photo to show the image better:

What do you think?  Does it look like an angel to you?  A vortex?  A strange photo anomaly?  Whatever it may be, it's a very interesting image.

Ghost on the Stairs, Photos and Weird Footprints

Tim wrote to us asking for opinions (feel free to share yours below) regarding a photo and paranormal activity.  His story and photos are included below.
I've added a green rectangular box around the brown mass that appears on the stairs.  It appears that the person is holding the handrail and is wearing something on his head (i.e. hat).

Tim writes:
"I would appreciate it if you could post this for me.  I need all the help I can get.  I recently got involved in paranormal investigations after having two experiences that I could never explain. My first was when I was 12 years old and the second when I was 35.
I contacted a well known [paranormal investigation] group on Cape Cod and was invited to become a member—but because of job constraints I haven't been able to do so. I started doing research on my own and have been able to become quite knowledgeable in things paranormal.
About a month ago, I learned that one of my co-workers and his girlfriend moved out of her house 9 months ago because of paranormal activity and due to circumstances beyond her control have to move back in. Needless to say, they're afraid of the house and asked me for help.
Activity includes disembodied voices, blankets yanked off her kids beds, footsteps, doors slamming shut, full body apparitions, shadow figures, etc, etc. The phenomena was also witnessed by a few of her friends as well as her whole family for a span of about a year or so. I instructed her to take pictures throughout the house and would be there the next night. The morning before my 1st investigation she emailed me a picture taken in her basement by her friend and there appears to be an apparition on the stairs. It was taken at 10:30 in the morning and when the picture was taken nothing unusual was noticed until she viewed the pictures after the fact.
During my first investigation, I captured the sound of footsteps on the stairs where the picture was taken and 3 distinct laughs in an upstairs bedroom on a digital recorder. I saw a distinct shadow figure and had a bottle cap thrown into a room where me and several people were standing around talking. At the conclusion of my 1st investigation, I spread a spot of baby powder on the floor in the dining room and wrote my name about 12 inches across in the powder. The next day I instructed the homeowners to stay away from the house and not let any one go inside the house as another investigation was scheduled about a week later with the paranormal group I contacted. The day before the 2nd investigation, the homeowner called to inform me that she went to the house to pick up a vacuum cleaner and noticed there were footprints in the powder.

She assured me that no one had been in the house after we locked it up on the night when I spread the powder on the floor. I was involved with the 2nd investigation with the group and nothing was captured and no one had any personal experiences. A week later, I returned to the house and have on video knocks somewhere in the house responding to me and an overhead fluorescent light turning on by itself. What intrigues me about the light is that the only way to turn it on is to plug it in. On the video, you can see me turn the light off. Twenty-two minutes into the recording, the light pops on.

I've enclosed a picture of the apparition on the stairs and you'll notice the top of the head partially covers a beam. I've also enclose 3 pictures of the footprints. The homeowners have asked me to help them and are dissatisfied with the way the investigation was conducted by the group. I was disappointed as well, since I take this seriously and felt the group didn't. I've taken numerous witness statements that don't change and have some evidence that is very compelling. The homeowners trust me and have asked me for help. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated."
The footprint photos (posted below) are sure to create some debate.  I mentioned to Tim that the footprints may have been caused by a human being, and perhaps the homeowner accidentally stepped in the powder.  Tim replied with some interesting information.  He writes:
"I thought the same about the footprints until I saw them up close. One of the group members has been in law enforcement for years and examined them. He seems to think they're like engineer’s shoes or work shoes from a mill, but they're equal to a size 14 or 15. They're extremely large. I questioned the homeowner and her boyfriend and no one had been in the house until she took those pictures. I also took a "before" picture of the powder the night I completed my first investigation and I was the last one in the house and locked the door. I have that picture, if any one would like to see the powder as it appeared when I left the house and locked it up. Another interesting fact…While doing research on the property, I found out the house was built in 1910 by a mill as housing for Polish immigrant millworkers. A previous homeowner worked in the mill until it closed in 1936 and he doesn't appear on any local census report after that, and the house was sold in 1937."
weird footprintscloseup of weird footprints
Tim has done a great job researching the history of the property.  It's interesting that the shoes are very large, and seem to be "workmen's shoes."  The fact that the house was previously used by immigrant millworkers is very interesting—especially given the law enforcement officer's comments about the shoes.
Tim has asked for opinions, comments, and feedback from the community.  Feel free to share your thoughts below, as long as they are respectful.

Orb Photos & Mist from Pennsylvania Cemetery

Last year, Frank captured an interesting ectoplasm photo from a stone mill.  Here are some of Frank's newer orb & mist photos from a cemetery in Butler County, Pennsylvania.  Frank writes: "Thought you might find these pictures interesting. They came from a cemetary in Butler Co., PA. We also have EVP's of a little girl [who] said her name is Gertrude."

Speaking of cemeteries, have you visited your local cemetery yet?  Most cemeteries have some kind of paranormal activity, and they are great places to explore because you don't have to worry about getting permission to investigate, dealing with frightened or upset homeowners, getting release forms signed, etc.  Consider visiting your local cemetery and see what you discover.

The Haunted Borley Rectory: England's Most Haunted Places

haunted places borley recotryThe Borley Rectory is one of the most haunted places in England, with a long history of poltergeist activity.  The Borley Rectory was built as a home for Reverend Henry Bull in 1863, and sits next door to the Borley Church.
Unusual activity at the rectory includes ghostly apparitions, floating objects, spontaneous displacement of objects, strange smells, cold spots, and the sound of galloping horses.  When the rectory was destroyed by fire in 1939, photos of the ruins contained odd images and unexplained anomalies.
One of the last residents there (Captain W.H. Gregson) reported seeing the ghost of a nun wandering the grounds.  Other witnesses report seeing Gregson’s ghost walking with a lady in a gray cloak and a bald man in a black jacket.
The most disturbing activity took place with Marianne, the wife of Reverend Lionel Foyster, who lived in the house beginning in 1930.  An entity began communicating with Marianne by scratching messages on walls and the whole episode was captured on camera.  Also photographed was a floating brick and an apparition that looked like a floating ribbon.  Today, odd images and mysterious orbs appear in photographs taken at the Borley Rectory.

Paranormal Orb? Cheryl & Morris' Videos of Moving Orbs

Cheryl and her husband Morris have captured an interesting video & photo of what looks like a moving orb.  In the orb photo, you will notice a long wire running across the floor.  This is the cord from the infrared (IR) camera.  The stuff on the floor is from Cheryl's parrot (the parrot cage is covered with a black drape).  Cheryl writes…
"Hi Michelle.  Here is a pic and a short video with an IR camera.  Both were captured during an EVP session in our home.  We heard noises around our parrot's cage (not bird noises).  In the photo, you will see the wires for the IR camera on the floor—also my bird's mess that I forgot to vacuum before the session.
"In the video clip, my husband Morris felt like he got touched on the arm.  [In the video, you will see me] getting up [from the couch] to feel the cold spot he experienced.  You will see what we believe to be an orb come up from underneath the coffee table.  Then, as I stand up, the orb changes direction.   Feel free to share anything we send.  We enjoy all the info you send and it's so helpful."

Cheryl and Morris have also captured a number of EVPs in their home.  The activity began shortly after Cheryl's mother died in their home in 2006.  Here is the orb photo:
cheryl's moving orb photo

And here is Cheryl's 9-second video of a moving orb.  It's kind of difficult to see the orb, until the end of the video (just as Cheryl stands up to get off the couch).  You can clearly see the orb for a few seconds just as Cheryl is standing-up.
The second video that was captured shows the orb(s) more clearly.
Thanks to Cheryl and Morris for sharing their story, photo, and videos.  Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.

Haunted Winchester Mystery House Mansion

winchester mansion haunted mystery houseMany people believe the Winchester Mystery House Mansion is notoriously haunted.  The Winchester Mansion is an architectural oddity—with numerous ghosts and strange activity.  In the 1800's, the owner turned the mansion into a never-ending construction project to avenge the dead spirits killed by her husband's invention…
How the Winchester Mystery House Began

In 1884, widow Sarah Winchester—heiress to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company fortune—purchased an 8 bedroom home on 150 acres in San Jose (California), and embarked on a never-ending construction project.  Her purpose?  To remove the curse of “spirits seeking vengeance” for their death at the hands of a Winchester rifle.
Until her death in 1922, Sarah managed to keep three shifts of carpenters, architects and construction workers busy for 38 years!  By the end of her life, Sarah had turned the eight bedroom home into a 160-room Victorian mansion with three working elevators, 47 fireplaces, staircases that led to nowhere, doors that open to brick walls, and doors that open to the outside on the 2nd floor with a straight drop down.  There were no formal blueprints—Sarah would sketch out rooms on paper and tablecloths for the workers to follow.

The Winchester Mystery House Mansion and Paranormal Activity

Sarah started the never-ending construction project after an encounter with a Spiritualist medium, shortly after the death of her husband.  In March 1881, Sarah’s husband died of tuberculosis while the couple was living in Connecticut.  (Sarah’s daughter died 15 years earlier as an infant.)  Since Sarah was having a hard time dealing with the death of her husband, she went to see a medium.
winchester mansion haunted door to nowhereThe medium claimed her husband William was present and said, “[William] says for me to tell you that there is a curse on your family, which took the life of William and your child.  It will soon take you, too.  It is a curse that has resulted from the terrible weapon created by the Winchester family [the Winchester rifle].  Thousands of persons have died because of it, and their spirits are now seeking vengeance.”  The medium told Sarah to start a new life in the West, and to build a home for herself and for the spirits who had fallen at the hands of a Winchester rifle.  Sarah was told she could never stop building house—or the curse would take her, as it did her husband and daughter.
So Sarah never stopped building.  Inside the Winchester Mystery House, rooms are contained within rooms, and the floor plan is very chaotic.  Sarah spent a great deal of time in a room she called “The Séance Room.”
Paranormal activity inside the home includes numerous ghostly sightings, cold spots, disembodied footsteps & murmuring voices.  Visitors report seeing Sarah’s ghost wandering the rooms and halls of the home.  Psychics have investigated, and identified hundreds of other spirits who call the Winchester Mystery House “home.”  No one knows whether these spirits are really the souls killed by the famous Winchester rifle—or whether they are just restless spirits seeking peace.
The photo on the right shows one of the many "Doors to Nowhere" that the Winchester Mystery House contains.  Underneath the door, you can see the sign, "Door to Nowhere."  The current owners of the Winchester Mystery Mansion offer year-round tours, and the home is to the public.  Many of the architectural oddities are labeled with signs and information describing the features.  A number of the rooms on the 2nd floor have doors that lead outside—with sharp drops two stories down to the ground.

Orb Photo with a Face Inside? Carl's Story

One of my subscribers, Carl, sent me an interesting orb photo and story.  He asked me to share his story and photos online with you.  Carl writes:
"I have a photo that will send a cold shiver down your spine.  My daughter at the time was 8, and she kept telling me about a woman who came to see her at night.  When I asked my daughter what the woman looked like, she described my aunt who died a few years ago (to the tee).  Then one night, my daughter told me the woman wanted her to come outside in the backyard (thank god she didn't).  Anyhow, I took a picture of my kids outside and there was an orb—but not just any orb, this had a complete FACE inside of it.  Eyes, nose, mouth… everything.  There is one photo with nothing on it, and another photo with a face inside the orb.  I took two pictures, and only one had the orb. "
Here is the photo without the orb:

"I zoomed-in as much as I could on the picture, and these are the best up-close images I can get.  PLEASE believe me when I say this house had to be haunted.  This picture was not messed with in any way or form—this is a true picture.  The image inside the orb looks like a skull to me.  Please remember my daughter was only 8 at the time, and she was telling us stuff that there's is no way she would know.  As you can see, I sent you both pictures, and only one had this orb in it—the other didn't.  There was no light, no moon, and the inside light and screen door were behind her.  This is the same time my daughter started seeing things—she was really scared at this house.  We had to move because of it, and the same day we moved she has NEVER seen anything again.
"However, ever since we arrived in Florida in 2005, it seems like a cloud follows us everywhere we go.  Now in our new home, we are hearing things like children crying, seeing candles fall off the wall.  Last night, I went outside and took some pictures.  The moon was covered by clouds, and no lights were on for a block.  I turned my flash off, and captured images of orbs around the outside of the house.  I’m not scared or anything.  I would even love to become a ghost hunter, just because I never really believed in them until now."

Haunted Gettysburg (Pennsylvania)

Gettysburg haunted placesGettysburg marks the site of the bloodiest battle of the American Civil War, which took place July 1-3, 1863. More than 50,000 men lost their lives in the three-day battle, and thousands more were seriously injured.
The entire town of Gettysburg served as the battlefield–however, certain spots are reportedly more haunted than others.  Since 50,000 men lost their lives at Gettysburg, it’s no surprise that the area is filled with paranormal activity and many ghostly sightings.  Hotspots of paranormal activity include: The Devil’s Den, Cemetery Hill, Triangular Field, Sachs’ Bridge, and numerous private homes where generals and soldiers were housed.
The Devil's Den — Most Haunted Spot in Gettysburg?
The Devil’s Den is one of the most haunted places in Gettysburg.  In fact, more ghosts (of slain soldiers) have been reported in the Devil’s Den than in any other location in Gettysburg.  Even without ghosts, the Devil’s Den is an eerie place because of the enormous boulders which cast shadows, and seem to have been piled-up by a giant.  Due to its unique layout, the Confederate army made use of a sharpshooter—who hid behind the massive rocks (in blind-spots) and systematically shot-down hundreds of Union soldiers as they passed through the Devil’s Den.  Eventually, Union soldiers were able to use mirrors and field glass to determine the sharpshooter’s location and kill the man.  After the battle in the Devil’s Den ended, it is believed that a war correspondent/photographer moved some bodies in order to snap a good photograph.  It is rumored that the souls of the men who were moved have never found peace—and they continue to haunt the area.
Visitors and paranormal investigators report seeing apparitions and orbs, smelling phantom gunfire, and hearing disembodied sounds.  Many visitors report having camera problems in the Devil’s Den.  Cameras and electrical equipment stop working, and fully charged batteries are drained—but when visitors leave the Devil’s Den, the cameras suddenly start working again!

Triangular Field
Triangular Field is another area where electrical equipment and cameras often stop working.  Photo anomalies are also reported here.  When taking photos in Triangular Field, things appear on the developed picture that were not witnessed by the eye of the photographer while taking the picture.  Some visitors report that when taking photos in Triangular Field, they will see a very clear day and a grassy field in the background.  However, when receiving the developed photo, the background will be pitch black—with no grassy field in sight!

Haunted Cemetery Hill & Sachs Bridge
cemetery hill haunted gettysburgCemetery Hill is another paranormal hotspot.  During the war, the hill played a critical role in the Union army defense line.  Many soldiers were killed on Cemetery Hill, and their bodies were left to await burial on the streets of the town.  The smell from the rotting corpses combined with the hot July heat made Cemetery Hill one of the most gruesome places in Gettysburg.
It is reported that after the battle, the ladies of Gettysburg walked down the streets with peppermint scented handkerchiefs pressed to their faces to mask the horrible stench.  Many visitors to Gettysburg report phantom smells, including rotting corpses—and when walking down Baltimore Street, the phantom smells of peppermint and vanilla are still present today.  Today, Cemetery Hill sits adjacent to the National Cemetery, which has expanded to include a burial ground for soldiers from other wars.
Sachs Bridge is another location with plenty of paranormal activity.  The 100-foot long wooden-covered bridge was used during battle as a passageway across the water—and as a makeshift-hospital for the wounded.  Visitors to the bridge report the uneasy sensation of being watched, and many psychic photographs and EVP (electronic voice phenomena) have been captured here.  Some investigators report having been touched by unseen hands; others report seeing apparitions, smelling phantom smells, and hearing cannon fire.  Gettysburg is one of the top destinations for ghost hunters, history buffs, and paranormal enthusiasts.  You're bound to witness something unusual during your time here

The City that Loves the Dead

New Orleans is known for its ghost stories, and in the midst of the French Quarter is a Creole-style mansion on Royal and Governor Nicholls Streets that draws a lot of attention. It was once the home of Dr. Lalaurie and his wife Delphine. Katherine Smith, a New Orleans historian and tour guide for Haunted History Tours, documents the tale in Journey into Darkness: Ghosts and Vampires of New Orleans.
Delphine was a reputedly beautiful woman with long, black hair, and she and her husband were renowned for their extravagant parties. They had many slaves and seemed a respectable pair, but little did townspeople know what Madame Lalaurie did to make her slaves submissive. She had already been in court over charges of brutality, and on one occasion after complaints of abuse, several slaves had been removed from the home, but few people would speak out against this couple, so they were never arrested. Not even after a young girl jumped to her death from the second floor to escape her harsh mistress. Then one night in 1834, a fire brought a volunteer fire brigade to the home and the Lalauries' gruesome secrets were discovered.

As they put out the flames, they could smell the stench of death, so they broke into a locked attic room to find a truly disgusting scene. According to several accounts, dead slaves were chained to the walls, but some were still alive and housed in cages, starved or maimed by medical experiments. One man had been surgically transformed into a woman, and a woman's arm and leg bones had been broken and reset at odd angles. Another woman's skin had been peeled off, while the lips of a third were sewn shut. A few had been dissected, with their organs still exposed. Scattered around the room were pails full of body parts, organs, and severed heads.

A lynch mob was formed, but the Lalauries had escaped and were never heard from again. Renovations years later uncovered the skeletons of slaves apparently buried alive, but no one knows how many unfortunate victims these two brutes actually had.

Smith indicates that this building soon became known as "Haunted House," and people avoided it. Although it is a beautiful residence in a desirable location, it sat vacant for forty years. Then several successive owners reported such problems that it again sat vacant for a time. Stories include sightings of a large male in chains, a woman who shouts in French and carries a whip, pictures inside thrown from the walls, cameras not working, and furniture that moved around on its own. The current owner is aware of the tourists who come to see it, but requests privacy.
Among American cities, New Orleans may hold the record for hauntings, but others vie with it for that distinction. Savannah, Georgia is one of them.

A Bit About Voodoo

The versions of Voodoo which survived in the Southeastern USA, were connected with Christian mysticism in the minds of rural African Americans. Segregation minimized the number of bi-lingual African Americans (those who spoke basilect and fluent acrolect), and at the same time minimized the number of whites who could translate basilect well enough to discover Voodoo in the spoken, sung, or written words of middle class, working class or working-poor African Americans. In isolated African American communities, such as the Georgia Sea Islands or in the Mississippi Delta, Voodoo lore could be freely referenced and practices, at least the more subtle ones, were more public.
Many popular songs of the Delta Blues tradition (circa 1900 to 1941) referenced voodoo or its derivitive Hoodoo explicitly. Robert Johnson sang of "hot foot powder sprinkled all round my door" and Muddy Water(s) referenced "the gypsy woman", "seventh son", and the "mojo hand".

Scholars debate the variations of Voodoo, how they have survived, how much they have changed, and to what extent Christianity in general or Catholicism in particular were used as covers to enable the survival of Voodoo. A common saying is that Haiti is 80% Roman Catholic, 20% Protestant, and 100% Vodou. Thus the Catholic contribution to Haitian Vodou is quite noticeable.

However, in the United States the story may be a little different, depending upon which scholarship you read. Some scholars believe confusion about Voodoo in the USA arises because there is a widespread system of African American folk belief and practice known as Hudu or more popularly as hoodoo. The similarity of the words hoodoo and Voodoo notwithstanding, hoodoo may have tenuous connections to organized religion like Vodou, but hoodoo may be an integral part of the Vodoun religion in West Africa and arguably throughout all of Africa. Some aspects of hoodoo may be derived primarily from Congo and Angolan practices of Central Africa, and may retain elements of the traditions and practices that arose among Bantu language speakers.

Today, possibly due to the suppression of the Voodoo and Hoodoo traditions and Vodoun religion in the United States, most hoodoo 'rootworkers' are members of African American Protestant churches, but when hoodoo is compared to some of the African religions in the diaspora, the closest parallel is Cuban Palo, a survival of Congo religious beliefs.

In summary, Haitian Vudou is derived from West African religious traditions and was retained in modified form by enslaved Africans in the Caribbean who were captive in a mostly Catholic population. However, in the USA the Vodoun religion is derived from largely the Ewe and other West and central African groups

Public relations-wise, Vodou has come to be associated in the popular mind with such phenomena as "zombies" and "voodoo dolls." While there is evidence of zombie creation, it is a minor phenomenon within rural Haitian culture and not a part of the Vodou religion as such. Such things fall under the auspices of the bokor or sorcerer rather than the priest of the Lwa.

The practice of sticking pins in dolls has history in European folk magic, but its exact origins are unclear. How it became known as a method of cursing an individual by some followers of what has come to be called New Orleans Voodoo, which is a local variant of hoodoo, is a mystery. Some speculate that it was used as a means of self defense to intimidate superstitious slave owners. This practice is not unique to New Orleans voodoo, however, and has as much basis in European-based magical devices such as the poppet and the nkisi or bocio of West and Central Africa. These are in fact power objects, what in Haiti would be referred to as pwen, rather than magical surrogates for an intended target of sorcery whether for boon or for bane. Such voodoo dolls are not a feature of Haitian religion, although dolls intended for tourists may be found in the Iron Market in Port au Prince. The practice became closely associated with the Vodou religions in the public mind through the vehicle of horror movies and popular novels.

There is a practice in Haiti of nailing crude poppets with a discarded shoe on trees near the cemetery to act as messengers to the otherworld, which is very different in function from how poppets are portrayed as being used by voodoo worshippers in popular media and imagination, ie. for purposes of sympathetic magic towards another person. Another use of dolls in authentic Vodou practice is the incorporation of plastic doll babies in altars and objects used to represent or honor the spirits, or in pwen, which recalls the aforementioned use of bocio and nkisi figures in Africa.

Although Voodoo is often associated with Satanism, Satan is purely an Abrahamic belief and has not been incorporated in Voodoo tradition. When Mississippi Delta folksongs mix references to Voodoo and to Satan, what is being expressed is social pain such as from racism, which is couched in Christian terms and blamed on the devil. Those who practice voodoo do not worship or invoke the blessings of a devil.

Voodoo in New Orleans

INTRODUCTION TO VOODOO IN HAITI

First and foremost Voodoo is a religion. It is the dominant religion of Haiti. Many of the practices and descriptions of Voodoo belief may sound to us like rank superstition, but then, imagine the beliefs of Christianity to people who know nothing about it. Tell them about the trinity or the resurrection, or the presence of Jesus in the eucharist. Any of these practices which very intelligent Christians believe in the fullest would seem no less superstitious to someone unfamiliar with Christianity.
Thus I urge you to recognize that Voodoo is Haiti's religion, it is taken very seriously not merely by unlettered peasants, but many intelligent and learned members of the Haitian society believe as sincerely in Voodoo as do German theology professors in their Christianity. In no way do I expect you to believe in Voodoo; no more than I would expect you to convert to Islam if I taught a course on that religion. But, please do recognize that it is every bit as real a religion as the major religions of the world.
  1. The most basic concepts of Voodoo.
    1. There is one God, Bondye. This God is very similar to the God of Islam, Judaism and Christianity. There is only one God.
    2. There are three important categories of other spiritual beings:
      1. lwa. These are the various spirits of family members; the spirits of the major forces of the universe--good, evil, reproduction, health, all aspects of daily life.
        1. lwa interact with the people of earth.
        2. They "mount" people now and again during religious ceremonies and they give messages, and even cause various good and bad things to happen to people.
      2. The twins. A curious and rather mysterious set of forces of contradictories: good and evil, happy and sad etc. If honored now and again in religious services they will tend to help you have the better side of life.
      3. The dead. Mainly the souls of one's own family members who have died but have not yet been "reclaimed" by the family. Ignored family dead are dangerous. Honored and cared for family dead are helpful.
    3. The central and key aspect of Voodoo is healing people from illness. Such healing activities probably constitute 60% of all Voodoo activity. Healers heal with herbs, faith healing (with the help of lwa and other spirits) and, today, even with western medicine!
    4. The priesthood of Voodoo contains both men (houngan) and women (mambo). Their functions are:
      1. healing.
      2. perform religious ceremonies to call or pacify the spirits.
      3. to hold initiations for new priests(tesses) (kanzo service and taking the ason).
      4. Telling the future and reading dreams.
      5. casting spells and creating protections.
      6. creating potions for various purposes. (From love spells to death spells.)
For any of these they may receive fees. But, they may not too. This differs from one houngan and mambo to another. (Note his is similar to fees paid to rabbis, mullahs, priests and ministers.)
    5. Another central feature of Voodoo is the "service," the religious rites of the religion.
      1. These are usually held outside, under a rough roof and around the "poto mitan," the center pole. A houngan or mambo almost always directs these.
      2. Drums are used extensively to provide music and dancing is absolutely essential to the whole service.
      3. Services are fully participatory. Not only the houngan and mambo participate but nearly everyone present.
        1. A master of ceremonies (La Place) is often present.
        2. A hounganikon directs the music and motion.
        3. Hounsi (women only) are serving ladies, usually dressed in white.
        4. Those in attendance are nearly all participants and most can be "mounted" by lwa.
      4. In most services the lwa "mount" people. That is, they come and take over a person's body for a time. When the lwa come the person is gone. (It's not clear where the person goes.) The body is the body of the person, but it is really the lwa. If a male lwa mounts a female person, he is referred to as "he," not she, during the mounting.
      5. Nearly every Voodoo service has animal sacrifice. By killing the animal one releases life. The lwa are exhausted by the taxing task of running the universe. Thus they can receive this life sacrificed to them and are re-juvenated. They are usually quite happy about this.
      6. There are two primary sorts of Voodoo.
        1. Rada. This is a family spirit Voodoo and the Voodoo of the relatively peaceful and happy lwa.
        2. Petro. (In some areas called Congo.) This is a black magic Voodoo and the Voodoo of angry, mean and nasty lwa. Dangerous things happen in Petro including death curses, the making of zombi and wild sexual orgies SPECIAL NOTE By virtually all scholarly estimates one can find, Rada accounts for about 95% of Voodoo, if not more. Thus the spectacular tales of black magic, while very real, are extremely limited. Petro is not the typical Voodoo, but it does exist.
      7. The analysis of humans. Humans have two spirits and a body.
        1. ti-bon-ange (little good angel). This is similar to the conscience in the Western understanding of people.
        2. gros-bon-ange (big good angel). This is similar to the soul in Western theories of person, except the soul is much more separate from the person than is a western soul. For example, when the person goes before God for judgment it is the gros-bon-ange which presents "the person" to God and makes the person's case.
    6. Key terms in Voodoo
      1. hounfo--the parish or region of a houngan or mambo's influence.
      2. govi--a small earthen bottle into which the gros-bon-ange of dead ancestors can "rescued." After a person dies the gros-bon-ange goes to the underwater place. A year and a day after he or she goes their the relatives can recall the gros-bon-ange. Unfortunately this is a very expensive service, requiring a significant animal sacrifice, often an ox. Thus it is often considerable time before the service can be done. If too much time passes the ancestor may get a bit restless and cause trouble-- illness etc.
      3. serviteurs--serious practitioners of Voodoo.
      4. ason--the magic rattle of the houngan or mambo.
      5. lave tet--(washing of the head) an initiation ceremony held for serviteurs after they have been mounted for the first time.
      6. kanzo--the initiation ceremonies for those moving into a very serious level of Voodoo practice.
      7. taking of the ason--the final initiation into being a houngan or mambo. NOTE: Both kanzo and the taking of the ason are very secret services. However, in Alfred Metraux's book (VOODOO IN HAITI), through observation and talking with people who were not too careful about the secrecy of kanzo, he has pieced together a detailed account of the ceremony.
      8. verve--ceremonial drawings done in flour, of the various lwa.
      9. peristyle--the Voodoo temple. A tiny tiny place.
      10. poto mitan--the center pole in a Voodoo peristyle. It represents the center of the universe and all dancing revolves around the poto mitan.
      11. Les Invisibles--all spirits.
      12. Les Mysteries--
        1. the lwa themselves.
        2. sacred knowledge. Also called "konesans."
      13. The crossroads. A central image in Voodoo. This is the place where the two worlds (earth and spirit world) meet. Virtually all Voodoo acts, even healing, begin with the acknowledgment of the crossroads.
    7. Some of the central lwa in the Voodoo pantheon.
      1. Legba. An old man who is the gatekeeper between the two worlds, world of earth and the world of the Invisibles. He is the origin of life. The sun is one of his symbols, but he is also the source of regeneration and uses the symbol of the phallus.
      2. Kalfu (crossroads) is the Petro counterpart to Legba. He is the spirit of the night, the origins of darkness. The moon is his symbol. He can be placated, but is a dangerous lwa.
      3. Papa Ghede. lwa of death and resurrection. A total clown. Very erotic and comic. He is the lord of eroticism.
      4. Dumballah. The father figure. He is the good snake. The source of peace and tranquillity. The egg is offered to him when he comes to mount a person. He is much loved and sought after. His wife Aida-wedo attends him.
      5. Agwe. The sovereign of the seas. Especially honored, as one might well expect, by people who live near the sea.
      6. Ogoun. The warrior. Today, too, the force of politics. Violent.
      7. Erzulie. The earth mother. Spirit of the goddess of love. The muse of beauty. (Strongly identified with the Virgin Mary.) Her appearance (when she mounts someone) is one of cleansing, dressing, delicate foods daintily eaten. She can read the future in dreams. A much loved lwa.
    8. The FATALISM of Voodoo. Voodoo is much criticized by foreigners in Haiti. Sometimes it is simply because they profess a competing religion and don't want the people to stay with Voodoo. At other times they charge that it is devil worship. This claim is sheer nonsense when speaking of Rada Voodoo, the numerically primary form. It is less clear how to describe Petro. There are no "devils" in Voodoo, but Petro cultivates the evil or at least angry spirits.
However, many of the non-religious aspects of Voodoo which people often criticize really seem to me to be more the result of Voodoo's overwhelming fatalism. The view is that to an astonishing degree the lwa determine out lives. The Haitian serviteur has little use for anything like the Western idea of free will and personal responsibility. Rather, whatever has happened it is the lwa who have caused it.
If one would like to change anything in one's life, from a current illness to the fundaments of the social system, one must ask the lwa. One does not ACT on one's own. This would be counter-productive since it is the lwa who decide these things anyway.
Further, the lwa are not very changeable. Things are the way they are because the lwa have decided it. This fatalism contributes significantly to the peasants' unwillingness to struggle for liberation.
However, one can must the hard question: Is it Voodoo that has caused Haitian fatalism, or is it the history of the African/Haitian experience that has created Voodoo's fatalism?
    9. Voodoo's relationship to Christianity.
      1. The Catholic experience.
        1. Under the French slaves were forbidden from practicing Voodoo. Nonetheless Voodoo survived. The colonists did allow occasional dances on the weekends. These dances were actually Voodoo services!
        2. After the liberation of 1804 all white people were kicked out of Haiti and many were killed. This included Roman Catholic priests. Thus in 1804 the Vatican broke with Haiti and did not establish relations with her again until 1860.
        3. During this 56 year period houngans and mambos built up the public religion of Haiti, Voodoo, in a weird amalgamation of African spirit religion and Catholicism. Virtually all lwa became associated with Catholic saints (Dumballah the snake lwa is St. Patrick; Erzulie, the earth mother is the Virgin Mary). The most important consequence of this is that Haitians see nothing odd at all with practicing Voodoo and Catholicism side by side and are often very devout about each of them. I can't explain this, I only describe it.
        4. From time to time from 1860 until the late 1940s the Catholic Church waged campaigns against Voodoo. They never came to anything.
        5. In 1941-42 some elements of the Catholic Church waged an all out physical, holy war against Voodoo. They burned peristyle, Voodoo shrines, beat (some say even killed) houngans and mambo, demanded their ostracism from society and shot things up. But, they lost. Voodoo went under-ground to some extent, but it grew in popularity, in large measure because of the oppression.
        6. By the early 1950s the Catholic hierarchy halted this war, got rid of these priest warriors and made their peace with Voodoo. Voodoo drums and melodies were incorporated into Catholic church services. The Catholics took the position, if you can't defeat them, co-opt them. Relative peace has held between the Catholics and serviteurs ever since.
      2. The Protestants.
        1. Until the 1970s Haiti was nearly 100% Catholic.
        2. In the 1970s evangelical Protestantism came to Haiti. After Reagan came to power evangelization mushroomed.
        3. Evangelical Protestants are bitter enemies of Voodoo and denounce it all the time as devil worship. Many of these people claim that Haiti's misery is because she is being punished by God for the sins of her Voodoo serviteurs.
        4. Protestantism has come to Haiti as a serious business. Evangelical Protestants groups own 7 of Haiti's 11 radio stations and have made significant gains in conversions.
        5. Today most observers believe that at least 15% of the Christians in Haiti are Protestant evangelicals.

Voodoo Witchcraft (Very Cruel & Deadliest of all)
Voodoo Witchcraft comes from the African continent & is extremely lethal. In the last few years it has spread into other parts of the world & is being mixed with other forms of Black magic to harm and kill people.
The clothes, hair, nails and picture are used to make a doll that resembles the victim; the heart area of the doll is kept open for the final ritual. A ritual is performed and a heart is pulled out from a live animals body while it is vibrating and placed into the heart area of the doll, at this point the doll is infused with life connecting the doll with the victim with an invisible psychic chord.
  • Once the doll and the victim are connected, 2-3 inch needles are pushed in the doll at specific acupuncture points to break the energy system of the victim. As the pins are pushed into the doll the victim feels as if a needle is being pierced into his body. The victim can be sitting thousands of miles away and will experience the attacks instantaneously. If the victim was made to eat or drink food and/or water that consists of "Masaan" (Ash of the Dead) infused with negatively charged energy by the black magician, the effects are life threatening and gives unlimited control over the victims Mind & Body. The prime focus of the black magician is to destroy the immune system of their victim. In case of a man: head & temple area, thumbs & big toes are targeted to break the immune system. In case of women, breasts and private parts are attacked to terrorize & harm the victim. The individual can be killed using this technique in as little as 28 days (one Moon cycle). If the individual is physically, mentally, emotionally & spiritually strong it becomes very difficult for the attacker to kill the victim within a specific time period and the attacks can continue for years until the victim or the black magician dies. At present many forms of black magic are being used all over the world, the problem is rising at a horrifying rate and the governments are not interested in looking into the problem and making laws to punish the Black Magicians. In the past few years hushed up research has been done at the Stony Brook Medical College, New York. USA and they have concluded that Voodoo witchcraft can kill people. 90% of Vietnam is dominated by the practice of black magic; Parts of Asia including India, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia are the areas where the science of black magic is spreading like wild fire. In the west: America, Mexico & parts of South America, England, Eastern Europe & Africa are some of the areas where Black Magic & Voodoo witchcraft is on the rise. Here are some of the effects one can experience on the physical level if one has become a victim of Voodoo Witchcraft: In Voodoo the effects are not gradual but start instantly and the intensity of these attacks increase to higher levels depending upon the weakness of the individual.

  • Waking up with a jerk and in fear within moments one falls into the first stage of sleep.
  • A Dark or Grey smoke is seen in front of the eyes when awake.
  • One's complexion turns dark & as the time passes it turns to darker shades of black.
  • Stinging pains in different parts of the body.
  • Shooting stinging pain in the tongue and one wakes up with extreme pain with a blister on the tongue.
  • Burning of palms as if they have been put on fire
  • Lips and other body parts get swollen in the spur of the moment for no medical reasons.
  • Constant Fatigue/ Low Energy
  • Mood Swings & extremely negative thinking that can lead to suicides
  • Jerking/Twitching of muscles or body parts
  • feeling of ants crawling on the body or body parts vibrate
  • Heaviness/Tightness in the whole body or certain body parts
  • In serious cases where spirits have taken control of the house where the individual is residing: one can experience dripping plasma from the walls, unusual activity of the insects & other wierd phenomenon that is unexplainable & unrealistic. Some of the unusual activity is only visible to the victims.
  • Whether it is Black Magic or Voodoo witchcraft the effets are intensified on and around the Full Moon Nights and the Dark Moon nights
  • As the attacks continue the victim is torn down on multiple levels; gets bed ridden and eventually dies of no apparent medical reason. The doctor's cannot help him because the symptoms misguide the doctors into giving the individual stronger treatments with every passing day and one day the body gives-up. If any of the above symptoms match your situation, you should immediately get professional help. There are some specific mantras in the Rig Vedas that can start protecting you immediately. Here are some precautions that you can take from becoming a victim

  • Do not eat or drink any item from anyone unless the person shares that food item with you.
  • Sweets/Desserts that are filled with "Ash of the Dead" and charged with negative mantra are used to create an opening in your auric shield and that opening is used as a channel to control your body & mind.
  • Black Magic is done using your picture, clothes, hair, nails, blood, saliva, skin tissue & used menstrual pads
  • Women get affected with black magic more easily than men, in women the effects can be observed on the surface while in men it works as an undercurrent and is not visible.
  • Black magic can also be done by touching your body or looking straight into your eyes.
  • Anything that carries an aura can be charged with negative energies to create an opening in the auric field of the victim. Examples: Clothing, jewelry, piece of paper, stuffed animals or stuffed dolls e.t.c
  • Black magic can also be done using your name and your mother's name hence do not give sensitive information to everyone
  • There is nothing irrational about black magic as it is an ancient science and can be mastered to hurt or heal people hence follow the rule of Trusting in God but staying on Guard
  • Exploring Saint Louis Cemetery ,Kenny and I wander around the Saint Louis Cemetary in New Orleans. We look at Marie Laveau's tomb.

    Marie Laveau The Voodoo Queen

Believed to be born in New Orleans in 1794 and died in New Orleans on June 15th, 1881. A free woman of color as well as a Quadroon (African, Indian, French and Spanish), she became the most famous and powerful Voodoo Queen in the world, so powerful that she acclaimed herself the Pope of Voodoo in the 1830s. She was respected and feared by thousands including the Catholic Church. A devout catholic, going to mass each day, she got permission to hold rituals behind St. Louis Cathedral. Starting out as a hairdresser and later as a selfless nurse, Marie Laveau became the first commercial Voodoo Queen. She had fifteen children by her second husband, one of which (Marie Philomene Laveau Glapion) walked in her footsteps and became almost as powerful as her mother.

How To Make A Voodoo Doll

New Orleans Voodoo Doll Basic Materials: 2 sticks, Spanish moss, feathers, scrap material ( Cloth ) in power colors, brown natural twine , imagination and intent.
    yellow - success
    white - positive
    red - power
    purple - spirituality
    green - money
    blue - love
    black - repelling negative energy

Make your doll in one of the 7 Power Colors. You pick the color for what you need. You make a cross with the two sticks. Apple Wood (natural not processed ) works best as this is believed by many to be the tree of life. Once you have made the cross fasten it together and tie it tight with twine. Now take the spanish moss and build the doll a body. Tie the moss to the sticks with your twine. Now you can get as elabrate as you want to. Make your doll clothes in the power color you need. You can make your doll a head out of cloth and moss or buy you one already made. Its really best to make it yourself for it to have the most power. If you have fingernail clippings or hair of a loved one or enemy they go sewed up in the head of the doll. You can decorate your doll and now comes the fun part. If you made it for one of the power colors to bring you what that color is supposed to bring you keep the doll close to you and burn a candle near it at night. Especially on the full of the moon.
    Voodoo Black Magic

If you wish to bring your enemy bad luck you need something that belongs to them. This is where that hair or fingernail clippings come in. If this is you then you need to sew them up in the dolls head and you make your doll with a black body. You place the doll and a picture of the person you want to bring bad things to next to a black candle. You burn the candle every night for a few minutes 3-4 min before midnight and 3-4 min after midnight. Durning this time you say quietly to the doll what you would like to happen to that person. You can try sticking pins with black heads into the doll. Once you put a pin in you leave it there. After 3 full moons you wrap the doll and any candle that is left in black cloth and you bury it as close to the persons house you have been hexing as possible. If you did it right bad luck and unhappy times will come to them

We are not telling you to do this. This is how Voodoo Practitioners working Black Magic on someone did it.

    Haunted in New Orleans

    St. Louis Cathedral Hauntings

New Orleans has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to ghost stories and hauntings. Here in the city we sometimes treat them casually, because we take these things for granted. However, different seasons or times of the year bring to mind certain stories, some of which are widely renowned, and some of which are whispered more discreetly. We decided to start a series re-telling some of our favorites, and hinting where you might run into a ghost or two when you visit the city. Today we begin with St. Louis Cathedral.
    Pere Antoine
Friar Antonio de Sedella came to New Orleans around 1774 with the Spanish Inquisition in Louisiana. Never an enthusiastic inquisitor, over the course of a few years, Father Sedella became the beloved Pere Antoine, the pastor of the (then) St.
Louis Church. He baptized Marie Laveau, performed her wedding ceremony, and together with her did much for the imprisoned, as well as the slave population, in New Orleans. They worked tirelessly to free women of color and their children. The church burned in the great fire of 1788, and a new church was completed in 1794, designated this time as a cathedral. Pere Antoine was pastor until his death in 1829, and was particularly loved among the poor. Many stories abound about him and his life--but what has he been doing lately? All signs point to the fact that he still loves the city that loved him so much.
    Pere Antoine's Alley
Many people report having seen Pere Antoine walking slowly down the small alley named for him alongside his St. Louis Cathedral. He is mostly drawn to the early mornings when the French Quarter is quieter, but has also been discovered disappearing into the mist of a winter afternoon. In these sightings, he usually doesn't appear to notice anyone because he is almost always reading his breviary, or book of prayers. People who have seen him like this experience a feeling of comfort, no matter what they have been doing the night before! Sometimes though, he's a little more active. One woman we know was taking a short cut through the alley on a rainy afternoon, on her way to lunch. Tottering on high heels, she tripped straight into the arms of a black-robed man with a sharp nose and a stern expression. After righting herself with the aid of her rescuer, she brushed off her skirt and looked up to see--nobody. The helping hand was invisible, but she heard a disembodied voice whisper a short phrase in French. It scared us, but our friend was unruffled, and even though she doesn't know what the good father said, she reported experiencing a sense of peace.
    Pere Antoine's Christmas
At Midnight Mass at St. Louis Cathedral, some worshippers have told of seeing Pere Antoine walking near left side of the main altar, holding a candle. He is distinguishable partly because his Capuchin robe contrasts with the more celebratory garments of the Archbishop and other priests, and partly because he seems to fade away as he approaches. Perhaps he prefers the Latin Mass, as he knew it.
    Pere Dagobert
Pere Dagobert was a Capuchin monk who became pastor of St. Louis Church in 1745. Also a champion of the poor and disenfranchised, Pere Dagobert was an immensely charismatic personality. When, in 1764, the French found out that New Orleans had been ceded to Spain, there was instant fear and rebellion. Six ringleaders of the revolt, prominent friends of the monk, were executed by a firing squad and left unburied by order of the Spanish governor.
Pere Dagobert would not allow this outrage, and somehow, under the watchful eyes of the Spanish garrison, recovered the bodies, notified the families, and performed a burial Mass in the church. The bodies were buried with a Catholic ceremony in St. Louis Cemetery Number 1, after a funeral procession during a rainstorm.
The haunting by Pere Dagobert is particularly beautiful. Also seen in the Cathedral, he is best known for his heavenly voice singing hymns along the streets from the Cathedral to the cemetery. His "Kyrie" rings out especially mournful on a rainy night
"The Brown Lady" of Raynham Hall
This photo was taken in 1936 at Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England. This portraint of "The Brown Lady" is arguably the most famous and well-regarded ghost photograph ever taken. The ghost is thought to be that of Lady Dorothy Townshend, wife of Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount of Raynham, residents of Raynham Hall in Norfolk, England in the early 1700s. It was rumored that Dorothy, before her marriage to Charles, had been the mistress of Lord Wharton. Charles suspected Dorothy of infidelity. Although according to legal records she was buried in 1726, it was suspected that the funeral was a sham and that Charles had locked his wife away in a remote corner of the house until her death many years later.
Stair Case Ghost of National Museum, Greenwich, England
Rev. Ralph Hardy, a retired clergyman from White Rock, British Columbia, took this now famous photograph in 1966. He intended merely to photograph the beautiful staircase in the Queen's House section of the National Museum in Greenwich, England. Upon development, however the photo revealed a shrouded figure climbing the stairs, seeming to hold the railing with both hands. Experts, including some from Kodak, who examined the original negative concluded that it had not been tampered with. Its been said that unexplained figures have been seen on occasion in the vicinity of the staircase, and unexplained footsteps have also been heard.
    Darn Backseat Drivers!
In 1959 Mable Chinnery went to the cemetery to visit the grave of her mother, as any devoted daughter is apt to do. She took some photos of the gravesite and then turned and took this picture of her husband sitting alone in the car's passenger seat. The film was developed and this came out: somebody sitting in the backseat wearing glasses, clear as day. Mrs. Chinnery swore that the "backseat driver" was none other than her own mother... whose gravesite she was standing next to when she took the picture! Hmmmm... a live husband and a deceased mother-in-law looking over his shoulder: there's a joke here, I just know it.

What Do You Want On Your Tombstone?
Back in 1996 Ike Clanton took this photo of a friend wearing western duds, in the middle of Tombstone's Boothill Graveyard. They swear that nobody else was in sight when they made this picture. Furthermore, some time later they tried to restage this picture with someone standing at the spot where the "mystery man" appears in the background. Ike Clanton says that it was impossible to take such a picture and not show the rear person's legs. Clanton said he wasn't so sure about Tombstone being haunted, but this photo made a believer out of him. There's so much ghostly activity going on in the famous town that Clanton's set up a special section of his website dedicated to Tombstone's population of yesteryear. Well worth checking out, if nothing else than for the sense of history that this excellent website conveys.
Come On Baby, Light My Fire

Of all the ghost photos I've seen (well, except for that one that I can't show at the present time), this one is hands-down the most eerie. Probably the most disturbing too. I didn't know about this one until a few months ago. Almost ten years ago, on November 19th, 1995, Wem Town Hall in Shropshire, England was engulfed in flames and burned to the ground. As firefighters tried to stave off the inferno a town resident, Tony O'Rahilly, took pictures from across the street using a telephoto lens on his camera. There, rather clearly in one of the photos, is what looks very much to be a small girl standing in a doorway, with the brightness of the flames behind her. No one ever remembered there being a small girl present on scene, much less in that close a proximity to the fire. The photo and the original negative were turned over to a photo expert who decided that the picture was 100% authentic: "The negative is a straightforward piece of black-and-white work and shows no sign of having been tampered with." Okay, so what's a girl ghost doing in such a big fire? Well in 1677 a fire destroyed many of Wem's wooden houses. The fire was said to have been caused by a 14-year old girl named Jane Churm, who had been careless with a candle. Churm died in the fire along with several others, and her ghost is said to still haunt the area. Whether there's such a thing as ghosts or not, it must be said: if this is just a trick, an illusion of smoke and fire that happened to be captured on film, it's a zillion-to-one coincidence that it just so happened to appear in the form of a girl who also died in a terrible fire at the same location. But hey, stranger things than that have happened in this world, right?
Ghost of Bachelor's Grove Cemetery, Chicago
This photo was taken during an investigation of Bachelor's Grove Cemetery near Chicago by the Ghost Research Society(GRS). On August 10, 1991 several memeber of the GRS were at the cemetery, a small abandoned garveyard on the edge of the Rubio Woods Forest Preserve, near the suburb of Midlothian, Illinois. Reputed to be one of the most haunted cemeteries in the U.S., Bachelor's Grove has been the site of well over 100 different reports of strange phenomena, including apparitions, unexplained sights and sounds, and even glowing balls of light. When developed, this image emerged: what looks like a lonely looking young woman dressed in white sitting on a tombstone. Parts of her body her partially tranparent and the style of the dress seems to be out of date.
"And the sea gave up the dead which were in it..."
I first saw this photo over twenty years ago. It was the first "ghost photo" I ever came across and it still wigs me out to look at it. In 1924 James Courtney and Michael Meehan, two crewmen of the tanker S.S. Watertown, were accidentally killed by gas fumes while cleaning a cargo tank. The crew of the Watertown - on its way to the Panama Canal from New York City ' buried the two sailors at sea off the Mexican coast. That was on December 4th. On December 5th the first mate reported that the faces of Courtney and Meehan were appearing in the water off the port side of the ship. Over the next several days every member of the crew witnessed the faces appear and disappear, including the ship's captain. When he reported this to his supervisors after docking in New Orleans it was suggested that he try to photograph the faces. Captain Keith Tracy bought a camera and the ship was soon underway again. Sure enough, the faces appeared, and Tracy took six pictures, then secured the camera in the ship's vault. The camera was not removed until it was taken to a commercial developer after docking in New York City. Five of the photos showed nothing unusual, but the sixth clearly showed what was said to be the faces of the two dead crewmen. No evidence of forgery or tampering of the film was ever discovered. The faces stopped appearing after a new crew was brought aboard the Watertown.

    The Newby Church Monk
Reverend K.F. Lord took a picture of the altar at his church in North Yorkshire, England (why are the GOOD ghosts always found in England?) and this is what came out. The picture and the negative are said to have been thoroughly examined by photographic experts and they can't find any evidence that this was either a double exposure, or artificially altered. The "thing" is calculated to be standing nine feet tall, and no one's found any record of a monk that humongous ever being at Newby Church. Who is it? What is it? Trick of light or something else? Either way it's way too creepy to not mention on this list.
    Ghost Child at Cemetery
A woman named Mrs. Andrews was visiting the grave of her daughter Joyce, who died at 17. Andrews saw nothing unusual when she took this photo of Joyce's gravemarker. When the film was developed, Mrs. Andrews was astonished to see the image of a small child sitting happily at her daughter's grave. The ghost child seem to be aware of Mrs. Andrews since he or she is looking directly into the camera. Is it possible a double exposure? Mrs. Andrews said there were no such children nearby when she took the photograh and moreover did not recognize the child at all. It was no one she would have taken photograh of. She remarked that she did not believe it was the ghost of her daughter as a child.

    London's St. Botolph's Chruch Ghost
In 1982, photographer Chris Brackley took a photograph of the interior of London's St. Botolph's Chruch, but never expected what would appear on the film. High in the Church's loft, seen in the upper right hand corner of his photogarph, is a transparent form of what looks like a woman. According to Brackley, to his knowledge there were only three people in the church when this photograh was taken, and none of them were in that loft.

    Church Minister Ghost
According to Brad Steiger's Real Ghosts, restless spirits and haunted places, where this photo was found, there was only one other photographer in the church beside the person who took this picture. Neither of them recalled seeing ghost or any flesh-and-blood person standing there who could account for this image. Because the figure is all in black, it has been theorized that the apparition could be that of the churuch minister.
    Grandfather Ghost Standing Behind Grandmother
"The lady in the color photo is my granny," she says. "She lived on her own until age 94, when her mind started to weaken and had to be moved to an assisted living home for her own safety. At the end of the first week, there was a picnic for the residents and their families. My mother and sister attended. My sister took two pictures that day, and this is one of them. It was taken on Sunday, 8/17/97, and we think the man behind her is my grandpa who passed away on Sunday, 8/14/84. We did not notice the man in the picture until Christmas Day, 2000 (granny had since passed away), while browsing through some loose family photos at my parents' house. My sister thought it was such a nice picture of granny that she even made a copy for mom, but still, nobody noticed the man behind her for over three years! When I arrived at my parents' house that Christmas day, my sister handed me the picture and said, "Who do you think this man behind granny looks like?" It took a few seconds for it to sink in. I was absolutely speechless. The black and white photos show that it really looks like him."
I don't need what might be a ghost's photograph to attest to this truth: when you're in love with that one special someone, nothing will stop you from being with that person. But it's still pretty nice to get a tangible confirmation of that every once in awhile..
Railroad Crossing Ghost in San Antonio, Texas
A Strange legend surrounds a railroad crossing of San Antonio, Texas. The intersection of the roadway and railraod track, so the story goes, was the site of a tragic accidents in which several school-aged children were killed - but their ghosts linger at the spot and will push idled cars across the tracks, even though the path is uphill. Andy and Debi Chesney's daughter and some of her friends had recently been to the crossing to test the legend, and she took some photographs. Inexplicably, a strange, transparent figure turned up in one of the photos.
    Freddy Jackson's Comeback
Freddy Jackson was a mechanic in the Royal Air Force in World War I. Freddy Jackson's squadron served onboard the H.M.S. Daedalus. Freddy Jackson was killed in 1919 when an airplane propeller hit him. Two days later when the squadron assembled for a group photo, Freddy Jackson faithfully showed up, grinning behind the ear of a fellow comrade. Guess nobody bothered to tell Freddy Jackson that he was dead. His face was widely recognized in this photo by members of the squadron.
    His Favorite Chair
Remember how Archie Bunker liked his recliner so much that he never let anyone else sit in it? Well, ol' Archie doesn't have anything on Lord Combermere. After being ran over by a horse-drawn carriage he died in 1891. A photographer set up a camera with its shutter open for one hour in the manor's library while the entire staff was off at Lord Combermere's funeral, some four miles away. When the plate was developed, the startling image of what looks to be a man's head and arm sitting in the chair was immediately noticed. Many of the staff said that the image looked very much like the late lord, and it happened to be sitting in Combermere's favorite chair in the library

The biggest thing is that as per Govt. of India rules there has to be an office of Archaeology Survey of India (ASI) beside every historical structure in India. But even Government authorities couldn't dare to open an office there and they opened their office about one kilometer away from the ruins of Bhangarh.

Bhangarh, the most haunted place of India

    VOA News

India, with its rich and long history, is full of mysteries. Perhaps none is as puzzling as what happened hundreds of years ago at a royal city in Rajasthan, now under excavation. VOA Correspondent Steve Herman went to look and has this report from the ghost town of Bhangarh.

Real account from people who're missing now

A photograph and a diary entry

Real account from people who're missing now
"The place was absolutely dark! No artificial lighting. At all! we parked the car strategically so as make use of the car's headlamps and jumped the iron gate and, we were in. Of course, this didn't happen so fast and without a lot of discussions and thinking and some more re-thinking. Soon we were far from the car and the only luminescence in the pitch blackness was my phone flashlight. We'd gone way in and were scared to death, we'd dare not go inside the caves, there were bats. We wanted to stay away from the trees and wilderness, black panthers and snakes were common here.

The guard told us the story of Bhangarh, how a tantrik cursed the town so its inhabitants would die suddenly , he cursed- that none of the houses would have roofs over them. The guard then showed us that in fact none of the ancient houses had roofs other than the mandirs, the temples! I shit you not. And that moment, it was bone-chilling! He took us to the gate and made us leave. We left. I slept on the way and damn, I cant forget the nightmares I had that night."

    Last entry:

"I woke up at 7 am to find myself in the middle of nowhere, turns out we'd lost the way back and my friend who was driving had parked the car and dozed off. Boy, he must have gone through crazy shit. But now, it was daylight, we felt safer, though we had no clue where we were and there were no people around! there was no no mobile network,so we couldn't make calls. that was still manageable, but the car? it would not start!"

A search party went looking for these boys but no success...only their car, a camera and a diary with these notes scribbled were found. Apparently, they visited the place for a night of ghost hunting.

There are ghosts, and there are haunted places. How many haunted places, though, have the distinction of being acknowledged by a government? None, we think. Take Bhangarh in the state of Rajasthan, India for example. Local mythology says the place is haunted, as local mythologies are wont to do. But in this case, the Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) in charge of it warns people off the area!

Bhangarh is a place on way from Jaipur to Alwar city in Rajasthan state of India. Today Bhangarh is known for it's ruins where nobody dares to stay after sunset. Going to history we find that this town was established by Madho Singh, younger brother of King Akbar’s General Man Singh, in 1631. But the city seems to have been abandoned in a hurry some centuries later. As per local folks, due to some curse the whole town was vacated overnight. According to this curse It was also said that if the town was ever rediscovered, the township would not be found, but only temples would show up.

True to the story, only temples dot the landscape and even far up on the mountains only shrines can be seen. People say that nobody returned from there who stayed there after dark. The biggest thing is that as per Govt. of India rules there has to be an office of Archaeology Survey of India (ASI) beside every historical structure in India. But even Government authorities couldn’t dare to open an office there and they opened their office about one kilometer away from the ruins of Bhangarh.

Also ASI has put a signboard at Bhangarh saying, "Staying after sunset is strictly prohibited in this area." People who visit this place out of tourist interest say that there is a strange feeling in the atmosphere of Bhangarh, which causes sort of anxiety and restlessness.

Those who swear by the Bhangarh’s resident ghosts, say that the ASI too is scared of the parnanormal activity associated with the fort; hence the ASI board has been put up at a safe distance from the fort, next to a temple. Many locals and visitors claim that they have witnessed paranormal activities – like sounds of music and dancing and wierd color spots in photographs of chambers
